Mission for the Poor Charity

The Mission for the Poor Charity is primarily based in Chicago and focuses on raising awareness about education and food insecurities in Uganda. Usually, various fundraisers throughout the year take place as well as members of the charity speaking at events to inform individuals of what they are actually donating to.

What I learned from Mission for the Poor Charity

One fundraiser that raises the most money is the bake sale that happens twice each year. This has been a great way to raise money while also trying a variety of treats and discovering new recipes.

The funds raised from this initiative go towards providing healthy meals to children living in Uganda. Furthermore, there are classes that allow kids to learn about what they can grow in their own backyards to continue the cycle of healthy foods.

One of the things that surprised me the most was that while Uganda has shown to have great potential in agriculture however food insecurity is classified as “serious” and malnutrition is widespread among children. Part of the reason for this is because the annual inflation rate has been increasing with a 9.2% rate in Feburary 2023, meaning that essential food prices continue to climb while wages remain the same. There is an estimated 68% employed in the agriculture sector, making Ugandanas highly vulnerable to food insecurity due to the uncertainties that come with the agriculture industry. Things such as changing climate, recurrent droughts, and the increase of disease and pests makes situations unpredictable, with massive crop failures and severe weather only making things worse.

Through Mission for the Poor charity, I hope to continue learning about food insecurities in Uganda while collaborating with others on what can be done.
