What is a micropantry?

A micropantry is similar to the concept of a little free library in that they are usually located in a public place that allows for any individual to take what they need while others replenish it.

Usually, a micropantry will contain only dry and canned foods that have long shelf lives so when people do take the food, it is something that can be used that day or later.

Where are micropantries?

Micropantries are community-driven with most being in neighborhoods and near schools. With these community efforts, there is an estimate of how many there are in certain areas, however, since they are relatively easy to start and maintain, there is no precise registration process that needs to be done. Therefore, an exact number remains unknown, but, again, there are estimates.

In the greater Chicagoland area, there are estimated to be about 75 micropantries (and growing)!

Fun Fact: It is estimated that 1 pantry can feed 13 families and average of 60 lbs of food is donated/used per day.
